According a research study published by the American Heart Association, a cup of beet juice a day can reduce your blood pressure. (1)

Combined with other lifestyle choices, drinking a cup of beet juice may be just what the doctor ordered to reduce or eliminate your need for blood pressure medications.

While they play an important role in the treatment of high blood pressure, there are side effects from medications that beet juice will not have.

Beets have their distinctive red color from a unique source of phytonutrients called betalains. They have strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxification support for the body.

Just a cup of beet juice a day can help reduce the inflammatory response in your body which leads to other disease, such as heart disease, and contains enough anti-oxidants to help fight cancer.

These same colorants may also turn both your urine and stool a slight red color. Don’t be surprised or concerned if this happens.

When you juice your beets be sure they are raw and include the greens that come with the root vegetable.

Both include healthy minerals and vitamins. However, use just 1/2 a beet a day in your juice, mixed with other vegetables, to get the most from your juicing and from the beet juice.

Beet juice is also rich in nitrates which can convert to nitric oxide once in the body. Some athletes have found that they can exercise 16 percent longer when they drink beet juice to boost their workout. This is much healthier than pre-workout substances that are often a combination of manufactured vitamin B and caffeine.

In another study from Wake Forest University, researchers found that beet juice can increase blood flow to the brain in older adults. They theorize that this may help to combat the progression of dementia or Alzheimer’s in the elderly.

The results were attributed to the higher nitrate diet with beet juice in which blood flow increased to the white matter of the frontal lobes commonly associated with the degeneration of dementia. (2)

Beets are also high in glutathione which can grab on to hundreds of different types of environmental toxins to be flushed down the toilet. When you are deficient in glutathione that can result in a build up of toxins and potentially, cancer. Drinking beet juice in your juicing can help to both prevent cancer and help in the treatment through the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Other benefits that have been discussed but do not currently have research to back up the claims include a reduction in gall bladder and kidney problems, gout, varicose veins and cleansing the liver.
