Homework can be very challenging, especially for high-energy kids who have a hard time sitting still at school, much less at home. As a parent, you may find yourself at a loss as to how you can help your kids cope with their homework challenges. Here are some tips that may help.

1. Schedule it in

Your kids need to know that you think homework is important. One way to do that is to have a designated “homework time.” This kind of routine can be very helpful for kids, and also establishes homework as an important task with its own allotted time.

Having a designated homework time also gives you more flexibility. That may seem ironic, but you and your child get to decide how many hours are needed, and what time of day those hours can come out of. Letting your child help you decide can also be motivational – that makes it less about the parent telling the child what to do and more about the child working with you to solve a problem.

Another tip about the scheduling – consider setting aside an “academic time” rather than just “homework time.” For example, if your child knows he or she has to spend an hour doing something learning-related, he or she will probably be less likely to hurry carelessly through a homework assignment just to get it done. Your child will understand that if he or she finishes his or her homework early, then he or she must find something else school- or learning-related to do.

2. Check it over

Make it a practice to look over your kids’ homework assignments. You don’t have to nit-pick, but just see that the homework is completed and that there are no glaringly obvious errors.

3. Get to know the teacher

Try to find out your child’s teacher’s expectations regarding homework, so that you can help your child reach those specific goals. It may be surprising how much teachers can differ in their homework expectations.

4. Quiet time

Homework/academic time should be free from noisy distractions if at all possible. Don’t settle down with homework assignments near the telephone, television, or computer, for instance (unless the homework assignment requires research on the computer). Some music is okay, especially if it helps filter out more distractions, such as loud younger siblings or other family member’s television programs. Just make sure the music is not distracting in and of itself.

5. Quiet place

Choose a special place for homework. Your child may come to look forward to settling down in this cozy, customized area of the house. Again guarding against distractions, you can set up the area to have snacks, drinks (even a mini fridge), comfy chairs or cushions, a special desk or table, and so forth.

As years went by, the academic setting has become less and less friendlier for kids. Although there are better classrooms, able teachers, and even helpful tools such as printed or online homework help, these doesn’t change the fact that there is more pressure that is placed on the kid’s shoulder as early as toddler hood!

Many parents as well as teachers—because probably of busy schedule and lots of work that need to be done—they become less observant to the child’s behavior when it comes to school life. In fact, up to now, many of them still don’t know the reason behind this loss of interest in studies—homework.

Experts say that homework is one of the things that the students—especially the younger ones—hate the most because they feel that they no longer have time to enjoy and have fun inside the house. If you are a parent, now is the time to take a good look at your child’s behavior when it comes to school or to homework because this will enable you to help the child the soonest possible time.

If you think that your child is suffering from “school fatigue” due to tons of assignments or homework, it is necessary that you take note of the following signs:

1. Persistent frustration. This is the major sign of kids who are losing interest in school due to lack of homework help from people around him or her. At first, this may be vague and can be mistaken to tantrums—especially to younger kids—but eventually, this behavior will become more and more noticeable because it will manifest in other things as well as places not only at school but inside the home as well.

2. Too much overwhelmed. This sign can be easy to distinguish in a child especially to those who usually don’t get overwhelmed in other things. You will know that there is lack of homework help when a child starts to complain about the homework even if it has not been explained by the teacher fully.

3. Repeated failure in completing any homework or a school project. This is a very alarming symptom for the child because this shows that the problem with lack of homework help affects his or her everyday function in school. If nothing is done this early, it may manifest to his or her other behaviors.

4. Head on struggle to staying in one task. There is no available homework help for the child if or her she manifests this symptom. This is because the confidence of the child is greatly affected, thus, disabling him or her to complete anything thinking that he or she will not be able to do it the right way.

5. Intends to ignore distractions. This leads to the child to juggling two or more tasks in one time without having to finish anything. If ever there one would be finished, it will be haphazard or dissatisfactory.

WHY HOMEWORK HELP IS IMPORTANT?

Homework help is very, very important for kids because this will somehow ensure the students that they are not alone in the academic world. For parents as well as siblings, helping the child out in accomplishing his or her homework properly will give the child a sense of fulfillment that he or she could turn to the family members when he or she needs help at homework.

Through the years, the academic environment has become more and more competitive to students. Others would take it as a challenge that is why they exert more effort when it comes to completing academic requirements. But there are those who see this drastic change as something overwhelming that is why instead of taking the challenge, they sulk into depression—thinking that they are not good enough to pass anything in school and even finish a homework without help.

Studies show that lack of homework help is one of the major reasons why students—especially those in the middle grade—lose interest in studying. This is because they feel that they should be having fun at this stage but instead, they are bombarded with homework that pushes them to the limit.

This change—the competitive academic environment—has led to the increase in dropouts in grade school and even in high school not only in the United States but to almost all countries in the world. Aside from lack of homework help, the increasing expectations also push students to lose interest in studying and pursuing higher education.

How can homework assistance help?

Students—especially those who are not academically inclined—easily get overwhelmed with tasks they are given at school. Most often that not, they tend to be below average that to be labeled as “low IQ” student. The same scenario happens during checking of homework. There are kids who choose not to show their homework and be given zero as a rating than to face humiliation once he or she did not get the correct answer or weren’t able to complete the assignment.

These homework scenarios at school can be prevented if people inside the houses—parents, siblings and even immediate relatives—would take the time to give some guidance and help to the child who has a homework.

If the child feels that there is somebody that he or she can ask for help when it comes to homework, it will be easier for him or her to open up about the other difficulties being experienced at school. A child who is having homework problems may hesitate to ask for help by him or herself thinking what the perception of other people on him or her. The tendency of is, more often than not, the child gets the wrong answer because he or she was anxious while doing it.

Experts say that making the child feel that he or she can ask for homework help to people around will boost the confidence he or she has. Being confident in his or her capability and skills is a very important foundation so he or she could accomplish goals and dreams in the future.

If the child is able to recognize who are the right people to turn to for homework help, he or she will know that no matter how hard the homework is, there would be always somebody to guide and teach him or her how to do it the proper way.

Aside from building the good foundation, providing homework help will also make him or her understand what are the areas that need improvement. These may pertain to subjects taken in school or certain topics that need reviewing. When the academic strengths have been identified this early, it would be easier to address the child’s weaknesses and turn these to opportunities of learning.

Homework is not easy. You know that, having gone through years in elementary, high school and college with mountain of them on your back. This is why most parents understand the need for them to help their children with their homework. They know how hard it can be to manage time and to even find the motivation to continue working after a full day in school.

But while helping your kids with their homework is important, doing it for them yourself should not be encouraged. Homeworks are there not to torture your kids but to give them the opportunity to learn about hard work and responsibility. It is teachers’ way of subtly teaching kids that in life, you will be given more work than you can imagine and that life isn’t just about fun and games. There are also times when you have to sacrifice leisure for work in order to have the time to fully relax.

This is perhaps the most common mistakes that parents make about homework. Because they don’t want their children to have difficulties and to suffer, they do the homework themselves thinking that their kids can learn about it by looking at them. But though children can do learn about the lesson, they will not have the motivation to utilize that learning. After all, mommy or daddy can do it anyway. So why exert the effort? Children also need to know that they have to work and it is their responsibility to do so. Doing this will help them become more responsible and reliable. These people will have good work ethic and good attitude towards work.

One of the ways to help your children with their homework without doing all the work yourself. is to set a specific time for them to study and do their homework. To help ease this new schedule and get children to accept it easily, involve them in the decision-making. Ask them what time they prefer to do their homework. Some children find it easier to work when they have already eaten their snacks, relaxed for a while and did something really fun. There are others who need to work on their homework immediately after school while the lessons are still fresh in their minds.

As difficult as it is to believe, children thrive on schedules and routines. Remember that these little ones do not have any concepts yet of things. Everything is new so whatever you will teach them or tell them will feel like the law. That is why it is important for kids to learn at an early age, not only because this is the time when their brain development is at its peak but also because this is the time when they learn much about the environment. This is the time to teach them core values that they will need when they step out to the real world.

Setting the schedule for them will help them make homework time concrete in their minds and therefore help them remember. The routine will also help them get into the groove of things. When they are used to doing it, it will become automatic.

Another technique that parents can use to help their children with their homework is to provide a study corner with lots of resource materials and references. Having a special place where they can study will motivate children to work.

With the fast-paced environment we have today, it is only common for parents to have lesser time for their kids. Not because they want to, it’s just that the busy and competitive office or corporate world forces them to. Little do parents know that their office environment is not the only one that is getting more and more stressful—it’s also the school. Why? Because students are given tons of assignments without homework help to back them up.

HOMEWORK HELP AS BONDING TIME

Though now is a more stressful and busy world, it doesn’t mean that the parents should sacrifice the amount of time that they are giving to their kids especially those that are in school. If workload and busy schedule don’t permit them to provide homework help for the child who is in school, there are some other ways that this can be done.

Making homework help sessions a bonding time for the whole family is probably the best way to go about this. It doesn’t mean that the family members have to be complete at all times. What is important is the member of the family are willing to share some of their time to the child who needs help in doing his or her homework.

The following are other things that parents can try as well as other members of the family:

1. Meet with the child’s teacher. This may involve a free-wheeling discussion about the child’s progress in school. But aside from the academic status of the child, meeting with the teacher can also be the best time to talk about homework help options that can be arranged within the school or after school hours. One great way to go about this is to ask the teacher to group children and assist or help each other for a specific homework. This might work because children can complement each other’s weaknesses. This can also help boost the confidence of the child because he or she gets homework help not from an adult but from his or her fellow student.

2. Find time for “homework help sessions”. Although work can be tiring for older people, this is not enough reason not to find time to help kids or a younger sibling work on his or her assignment. It is a must that you keep a specific day wherein your schedule will be flexible so if the child or the sibling needs somebody to ask for homework help, you will be there.

3. Set the “homework help session” time and venue. Making homework help as a family thing is something that would make the child happy. This is because he or she will feel that he or she is important since almost all members of the family talk about his academic difficulties. The most common venue and time is over mealtime, say lunch or dinner. But you can also make use of the TV time to help the child with his or her homework.

4. Delegate a certain member of the family about a specific homework topic. Since not all members of the family are on call when the child needs some homework help, it is best if parents will delegate a specific member, say for a day or for a particular topic. This can be very helpful because the siblings as well as the parents can chose a subject where they think they are good at.

If there is only one child, the parents must divide the topics amongst themselves to tend to the chid’s queries.

Homework can be a nightmare especially for young kids who are not used to getting so much work. It was only a couple of years when all they do is play all day. But homework is their first shot with reality and they need to experience it early on in order to realize the hard work that they would need to do in the future. What parents can only do is to help their kids with their homework. Here are some ways that you can help without making them give up their independence.

1. Set a schedule
Kids thrive on routines. Early on, establish in them the value of schedules and hard work. Show them that work is important and should also be taken seriously along with hobbies and pastimes. Set a time frame on when they can do their homework. When doing this, take into account the preference of your kids.

There are kids who are more able to work well after an hour’s rest or playtime which will help them recharge their batteries. While waiting for their study schedule, you can give them merienda or allow them to watch their favorite TV show. Some kids, however, cannot be sidetrack. They need to go on with their schedule otherwise, they will lose their focus. These are the kids who will benefit more with a study schedule that commences immediately after class when everything is still fresh in their minds.

2. Guide them with their lessons
Although it is their responsibility and their duty as students to do their own assignments, it would not hurt if you are there at hand to answer any questions that they may have. You can guide them in their lessons and even give them mock quizzes if need be in order to help them with their grades. Just make sure though that you are not answering their homeworks yourself. They also need to work on their own.

3. Provide them with resources
If you cannot always be there to help your child, make sure that you will have some representatives in the form of little helpers like maybe a dictionary, a set of encyclopedia or even some review materials. This will also teach them to work on their own without people helping them. After all, these resource materials can help them a lot.

4. Give them a study corner
Nothing can motivate a person than a place of their own where they can study. Not only will it energize your kids to study, it will also give them that sense of importance. It will also show them that schoolwork is important and valuable for you and therefore, they should also give value to it.

4. Give them rewards
Helping them with their homework does not only involve helping them study or giving them mock quizzes. By encouraging them and motivating them to do good, you can make them better students. You can do this by giving them rewards, either in the form of material rewards or with praises and words of encouragement. This will not only help them in their assignments in school but it will also teach them that their efforts will be rewarded one way or the other.

Just make sure though that you do not overdo the material rewards. Time may come when they will only do it if there is a reward.

With the more competitive—not to mention more stressful—academic environment today, more and more kids are having a hard time keeping up with the demands of the school. Experts say that one of the major reasons why students—especially the younger ones—get tired or bored schooling is that they are given lots of assignments without knowing where to get homework help.

At home, the parents are the ones who must take in this responsibility of helping kids with assignments. Since they are older and more mature, they are expected to know more things. However, the traditional techniques and strategies for homework help don’t work in all types of kids. There are those who get easily bored and would just not listen. There are also those who would get easily distracted by the things inside the house and would not pay attention to what the parents are talking about.

For parents who have these kinds of kids, the best way to go about it is to be more creative during the “homework session”. If things are presented in different and creative ways, the kids will be more interested and enthusiastic all throughout.

UNLEASHING CREATIVITY DURING HOMEWORK HELP SESSIONS

Parents who would really want to help their kids who are having trouble in doing and finishing their homework should find ways to be more creative. If the kids see that the tutorials are presented in a different manner—aside from what they see in school—they will be more cooperative.

Here are some ways on how parents can be creative when helping their kids with their homework:

1. Think out of the box. If you are tutoring your child in a certain topic or assignment, it would be best if you use different approaches so he or she won’t be bored. You can present the discussion in a different manner that he or she will enjoy. Out of the box would mean that you are willing to go out of your usual way just for the child to pay attention to what are you teaching.

2. Be more engaging. Kids love activities that are fun and engaging. If you give them help in their homework, make sure that your attention is one hundred percent with the topic so the child will pay more attention. Remember, if the child sees that you are not really into what you are doing, he or she will also think of other things. When the child is distracted, it will be more difficult for him or her to absorb any information or learn anything.

3. Give them more freedom. Children get easily stressed out if the homework help session is too rigid or strict. Instead of paying attention, they will be more frantic and could not wait for the time that the session is finished. To avoid this scenario, try to provide a venue where they can be more relaxed. Also, give them ten-minute breaks where they can do the stuff that they want to do.

4. Use props. There are kids who are “visual learners”. This means that they learn faster when they are shown materials that can easily relate them to whatever it is that this being discussed. During homework help sessions, parents could use props such as toys and other materials for each respective subject.

Online homework help is a very big help not only to students but to parents who don’t have much time to spend tutoring their kids at home. Today, there are so many homework help sites that provide information about specific subjects. There are those that offer these pieces of information for free but there are also those who are asking for charges for individualized programs that are create for them.

BENEFITS OF ONLINE HOMEWORK HELP

With the Internet, nothing is impossible nowadays. This is because it makes access to information easier to people regardless of age or status in life. Young kids who are taught how to use the computer as well as the Internet are now having easier way of going about their assignments because they can get the information that they want at anytime of the day.

If you are a parent who are seeing signs that your child might be having difficulties in finishing their homework, now is the best time to get other options aside from your own tutoring. Many parents don’t know this but there are actually homework help sites that can enable kids to arrive at school with an assignment which are already correct and complete.

Although most of these sites that provide individualized programs offer charges, these can be minimal if it means that your child will be given utmost attention. Many parents will eventually realize that what they have paid for will be worth it once they see the improvements on the child’s willingness to learn and finish homework on time.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

If you are a parent looking for online homework help, it is best to conduct a simple research first. Once research has been done, you can cut down your options. The most important part of finding the right homework help provider is considering what are the needs of your child. Make sure that the provider you will choose can provide plans that would cater to the child’s homework needs as well.

In finding the best online homework for your child, make sure that you look for providers that:

1. Helps the child to catch up on any missed skills. This is very important because it will ensure that even if the child missed something on school, there would be something that would remind him or her about the topic. Since it can be presented on a one-on-one basis, there are greater chances that the child will understand the topic better.

2. Gives extra instruction. A good online homework should give extra instruction when it comes to school materials as well as concepts. This is very important to ensure that there would be more opportunities for learning and understanding for the child.

3. Helps improve the child’s organizational skills as well as his or her study habits. This is a very important qualification because it ensures that the child will be able to develop good study habits and acquire new skills even if the program is finished.

4. Has trained teachers who can help the child with his or her homework. This is also another important factor in looking for the best online homework help provider because good and patient teachers will ensure that your child will learn something at the end of the day especially in finishing his or her homework independently and on time.
