Autumn is going to be already here all over our own backyard garden. Not that autumn is without charm, but it does suggest that some wonderful spring and summer growers have died down. Not every bit is wasted, though, since there are lovely plants we can grow that will please us right up to the early part of winter.

What can you do once the flowers start to acquire a rusty aspect and trees start to lose their leaves? Those are generally the first evidence of the autumn, so you have to prepare the garden for the cold season. Between now and spring severe conditions will set in, which often can damage or destroy the things living in your garden if they are not protected. Here are some practical recommendations that would help you to prepare the garden for the autumn.

Owners of treed gardens need to ensure that the trees are clipped in time. Everything that you need to buy is a pair of garden shears to remove the dead branches. These have got the risk of suffocating the healthy branches by blocking sunlight from getting through. Numerous people are under the incorrect impression that dead leaves are a great natural source of fertilizer. Lots of the leaves might carry problems, affecting the soil later.

Supply the soil with the help of potassium fertilizers. The plants are going to be protected against the cold of winter by the enveloping layer. It is the optimal opportunity for planting those plants that will bloom in the spring. Old fertilizer layers should be removed and replaced with new ones. Only disease-free dead leaves, if you want to rely on them, may be spread evenly as a soil covering.

The appearance of October provides you with the most opportune time to plant evergreens. Water the earth a few days before planting. Don’t forget to water the bulbs soon after planting them but be sure not to drown them. Remember to always work with the elements, if it’s going to pour with rain in a few hours, don’t misuse your time watering the plants as this could be dangerous to your plants.

Something else you must do in autumn is dig the land. Tilling to a depth of 15 to 20 centimetres can be ideal. All vegetable matter resting on the ground, like fruit and leaves, must be removed before digging. Don’t burn the vegetation when it is healthy, since it could be used to fertilize the soil in a natural way.

Another thing to remember is the lawn. Cutting the grass really short is the optimal way to prepare your lawn for the winter. Do not overlook that there are fertilizers which are specially made to maintain your lawn’s health, so feed it that.

For the purpose of handy access keep your garden instruments out during October which is the best time for these jobs and for moving plants around before the beginning of winter. A covering of foil is exactly the thing to counteract your heat-loving decorative plants from freezing. Except when the plant is extremely large, a two-sheet overlaying of foil will do the job. It’s essential to also paint the lower foundation of the plant, especially for the younger ones as this will keep the harsh reflective light coming from the snow from damaging it.

We would all like to have more control over our working hours. This is one of the primary reasons that the the idea of working from home has become so popular. This really is particularly true for people who set up their own businesses. You need to have a home office if you’re setting up any kind of business operation and plan to work from home. This is crucial and requires concentrated planning, since it’s imperative that you be able to separate your home life from your working hours. When establishing a home office there are many considerations, such as space availability and business category. Following are a couple of things you should consider.

The primary place to begin is to consider the space in your house and how easily an existing room could be converted into a working office. When your home contains such a room, ask yourself if it might make a good work space for your office. The capacity of the space needs to be factored in based on what office furniture and fittings you will need. You will probably require an extra electrical wall socket or two, but these are easily gotten. And you want to consider the room’s location vis-a-vis household activity — you don’t want your office at the hub. An additional significant factor is the amount you can afford to spend. When you have the time and the cash, you can of course build an extra room for your home which will also add value to it.

If you find no way you can do anything in your house, the next area to look at is any outbuildings you may have. Specifically, lots of people choose to convert garages into an office and therefore you have the advantage of a working environment that can be distinct from your home life. For a lot of of us, our garages are just being used to accumulate junk anyway, so why not put all that space to better use? You can even think about converting just part of your garage into your office, provided it’s large enough. When thinking about your garage, be sure to examine all the possibilities.

Or possibly you’ve got a sizeable garden. Could part of it be roped off to build the perfect office space for you? Yes, this could cost a good amount, but if you can afford it it’s best; you will be literally removed from your household and all it’s non-work temptations, while still definitely “working at home”. Constructions of this kind will vary generally in cost, based on your needs and taste. As with any significant modification to your home, planning laws and insurance requirements must be considered.

If determining whether to create a home office, just do your research and stay within your budget. You will see the right solution and very quickly be enjoying all the benefits of working from your home.

People who have patios often have patio furniture which remains outdoors all year long. Each year they have to clean the furniture before use. These patio furniture cleaning tips you may make the task less of a problem, especially if you have wooden or teak furniture.

Teak patio furniture is popular because of the beauty of the wood. However, because it’s a natural product it does require extra care. Here are some of the items you’ll need to clean your patio furniture:

* Soft bristle brush
* Laundry detergent with bleach
* Teak sealer (optional)
* Teak protector (optional)
* Teak restorer (optional)
* Clear coating (optional)

When you first get your teak furniture, decide whether you want the furniture to remain the color it is when you get it or if you want the furniture to change with exposure to the sun. Some people are adamant about keeping their furniture the original honey color; others like the silver gray patina it gets from being in the sun. Which choice you make regarding your teak patio furniture could greatly affect how you clean it.

Manufacturers generally provide care instructions with every product. This is also true for those building teak or other wooden patio furniture. They may recommend specific cleaners, but you can do just as well by mixing a solution of 2 parts laundry detergent with bleach in 1 part water. Apply this to the wood with a soft bristle brush to help remove any surface dirt.

Thoroughly rinse the teak pieces by spraying them with water to remove leftover suds or any dirt the brush has removed. If you’re satisfied with allowing the teak to develop the gray patina, this is all you’ll need to do to care for your furniture. Otherwise, you’ll want to use the following methods.

You can remove the patina from teak furniture by using a two-step process and returning it to its original finish. This process normally requires you to apply a caustic cleaner and acid which will remove the patina. Be sure to read the instructions with the cleaner to ensure you remain safe. You may also have to lightly sand the piece to fully restore it.

Seal your teak furniture with a sealer specifically developed for it. This sealant will preserve the natural honey color as well as prevent the growth of mold and mildew. Some sealers can even protect it from developing stains when used around food.

Do not use varnish or non-recommended sealers on teak wood furniture. This could damage the wood and require much more sanding in the future. You also don’t want to allow water to pool on the furniture as it will cause damage.

Knowing these patio furniture cleaning tips will help you keep your teak patio furniture looking great. Remember to follow manufacturer’s guidelines for caring for your furniture or when using chemicals to clean it.

Run the cleaning cycle on the oven. Remove the curtains and blinds to wash them. Replace wall decorations and window items.

Go through the refrigerator, freezer and cabinets. Get rid of anything that has expired. Remove items your family won’t eat and take them to a shelter or food pantry. Clean the refrigerator and freezer, then replace the food. Clean the cabinets and replace the food. Sweep and mop the floor. Take your box of food to donate to the car to get it out of your house.

Bathroom

Pick up any dirty laundry. Remove everything from the counters and shower. Clean the sink and shower/tub before replacing any items. Remove the shower curtains and replace it if necessary. Clean the mirror and any light fixtures.

Clean the toilet – inside, outside and any fixtures. Remove any rugs or vacuum them. Empty the trash. Sweep and mop the floor, being sure to get behind the toilet.

Empty the cabinets and drawers and reorganize everything. Go through the medicine cabinet to ensure any expired medicines are removed. Call Poison Control to find the proper way to dispose of these items. Place items which are still usable back into the medicine cabinet.

Living Room/Den

Go through the room and remove anything that doesn’t belong there, such as shoes or dirty dishes. Remove pictures and decorations from the walls, mantle or bookshelves. Clean each one. Dust the light fixtures, lampshades, ceiling fans, shelves and corners. Wash the baseboards.

Remove the curtains and blinds. Wash them and when dry replace them. Vacuum the carpet and clean if necessary. Vacuum the furniture including in the crevices. Launder any slipcovers or pillows which can be washed.

Adult/Teen Bedrooms

Pick up the clutter and put things away. Remove curtains and bedding to be washed. Take down wall decorations or pictures. Wipe them down and dust around them. Wipe down the walls, switch plates, covers and clean the baseboards.

Vacuum and then flip the mattress before replacing the linens. Remove the items under the bed and vacuum under it before putting those items back. Vacuum the rest of the floor. Go through the closet and straighten it up. Check to see if any clothes need to be repaired. Organize the clothing. If you have items to get rid of, such as items that don’t fit or you haven’t worn in a while, now would be a good time.

Children’s Bedrooms

Pick up clutter and put things where they belong. Remove bedding and curtains to be washed. Wipe down walls, electrical covers, switch places and baseboards. Vacuum and flip the mattress. Replace the bedding and curtains when dry.

Go through and organize your children’s clothing and toys. There may be some items your child no longer uses or has outgrown. Consider giving those away to a day care center or battered women’s shelter. Clean under the bed and in the closet. Vacuum or mop the floors.

This spring cleaning checklist for your home will enable you to get your whole house clean. Remember to take your time. Even though spring cleaning is important, it doesn’t have to be all done in one day.

Growing a thriving garden is something that everyone is capable of doing. Even if you haven’t ever had very good luck with plants before, if you follow the right gardening tips, you can create a thriving garden-even if you don’t have a lot of space for growing things where you live. Even those who have tiny balconies or little yards. There are some who can create magnificent gardents inside of their homes! Keep reading if you want to learn all about how to grow and care for your own garden. This is the article for you!
Tomato plants are the most popular fruit plant for beginning gardeners. These plants are easy to plant and to take care of. You can grow them just about anywhere. You can grow them in just about any type of garden. They will grow even in their own containers. Most tomato plants don’t require much attention. A tomato plant is a great “starter” plant because you can eat the fruit it produces! That cliché about “eating the fruits of your labor” are true when you have tomoato plants in your garden. As a gardener, you need to make friends with bees. Even if you hate the idea of having bees near you, you need to learn to deal with them because they are good for your garden. Plants need pollen to help them grow and bees help carry pollen from place to place. Pollen is needed for plants to flower or bear fruit. What this means is that you simply need to get used to the idea of dealing with bees. You might even think about taking steps to make your garden more “bee friendly.” One of the easiest ways to attract bees to your garden is to plant tomatillo plants; bees love tomatillos. The only problem with planting tomatillo plants is if your family likes to eat them; if this is the case, plant one plant for the bees in one area of your garden and plant another in a different area of your garden.
Don’t use pesticides; use aphids instead. Using pesticides on your plants is terrible for the environment. They can also be very bad for your health if you plan on eating what you are growing. The best way to deal with pests who eat your plants is to introduce ladybugs loose in your garden. The ladybugs won’t do any damage to your plants because they eat the pests that would otherwise wreak havoc on your garden. Pest control bugs like ladybugs are great for gardens. They are far more environmentally friendly. You don’t have to worry about whether or not they are on your plants when you eat them. And they keep the pests out of your garden! Garden often is thought to be complicated. The truth is that anybody can learn how to do it. Don’t let yourself feel intimidated by the different and complex gardens you will see on television or in magazines. The truth is that, with enough patience and hard work, anybody can learn how to grow beautiful gardens. Even people who have never had any luck growing plants can learn how to grow a magnificent garden in just a few seasons of planting. Good luck! You’ll figure it out!

If you have enjoyed the fruits of your labor all summer long in the way of produce, you know how important it is to prepare a vegetable plot for winter. It helps to know what to do at the end of the growing season, as this can have a large impact on the next year’s harvest. These same ideas will also help you plan ahead and prepare an area for a garden if you’ve never grown one before.

Whether your proposed garden plot has had a garden there in the past or not, chances are there will be plant matter in the area. This could be plants which have yielded their last, or grass and weeds from the lawn. In either case you want to mark off the area you plan to use for your springtime garden. The best way to do this is to use wooden stakes pounded into the four corners, with colored tape to help you see the borders.

Divide the garden into five parts. One part will be set aside for plants which come back each year such as herbs, artichokes, rhubarb and asparagus. The remaining three plots will be rotated each year to ensure you don’t deplete the soil of nutrients.

Leave enough area between the parts to be able to walk and push a wheelbarrow through. This can be covered in gravel to keep weeds at bay, or you can use landscape fabric with bark chips to create a suitable surface. Of course, you don’t want to create such large sections to make it necessary to walk all over the beds. If you make the areas small enough, you should be able to reach the center from the side which means you’ll have less area to work.

Till under any organic matter which might be in the garden plot. You can also add any other organic materials such as manure or nutrients into the soil, and incorporate well. This will prepare the ground for the spring and provide any birds which are still around with a meal of any worms or insects which are in the soil.

Cover the entire garden with mulch to reduce the opportunity for winter weeds to grow. If you’d rather not use mulch because you may forget where the garden paths are, you can also sow a cover crop which will be tilled under in the spring.

Why not take advantage of the fact that you have the soil prepared and sow some winter vegetables. Carrots, onions and garlic can be planted in late summer to early fall. Allow the plants to germinate in the soil and cut back any green growth prior to the first frost. Cover them with mulch to keep the plants alive during the winter months and ready to grow come springtime.

Gardening is a time-consuming but rewarding experience. Think about preparing a vegetable plot for winter so it will have the best chance to succeed in the spring. Make some plans now on how you want to lay out the garden and what vegetables you want to plant, and then decide when to begin sowing seed indoors to be transplanted once spring arrives.

Colder temperatures and blustery winds will soon be a part of our daily life as winter ebbs ever closer. It’s important to begin winterizing your home long before the icy temperatures arrive. By taking a little time each weekend, your home will be ready for winter weather without much effort. You can keep more warmth in your home by taking the time to winter-proof your home.

Begin by checking with your local utilities to see if they have any programs to help you save on your winter energy bills. Many utilities have a home heating check-up or can at least recommend steps you can take to ensure your home isn’t wasting energy during the winter months. With proper upkeep and weather-proofing, you can save money this year.

One of the easiest things to do to winter-proof your home is to check for leaks around your windows and doors. Light a candle and hold it about six inches from the window or door and move it around slowly. If the candle flickers, you know there’s a leak in that area. By weather stripping or caulking to stop the leaks, you can save up to 15% off your heating bill.

After you’ve added weather stripping, there could still be a draft. You can find plastic sheeting kits at most home improvement or discount stores which will help to block drafts. The plastic sheet is stretched over the window and then gone over with a blow dryer. This creates a barrier which will keep the cold air out.

Crawl under the home or in the attic, wherever your ductwork is, to check the seals as they will wear out over time and with use. Replace any ductwork that is damaged and re-tape any joints which have come loose. While you’re working around the ductwork you may also want to ensure there is enough insulation in both areas of your home.

Your heating unit or furnace should be checked each year to ensure it is working properly. Have a professional come out unless you’re very familiar with the mechanics of your furnace. Remember to clean or change the filter in your furnace each month during the winter. This will help it run properly and could reduce your heating bill. If your heating system runs on natural gas, you’ll want a professional to check it for gas leaks.

Clean out the gutters around your home and inspect the fascia boards. While you’re up along the roof, check the roof for damage and cracks in the chimney if you have one. Make any repairs that are needed to ensure your home is as safe and secure as possible before winter arrives.

Winterize your air conditioner, whether it is a window unit or a large whole-house unit. Shut the water off to the air conditioner so you don’t have to worry about it freezing. You’ll also want to cover it with an insulated blanket to keep snow and debris out of it.

Insulate pipes, wires or vents which lead outdoors. This will help keep cold air outside where it belongs. It would also be helpful to check around your light switches and electrical plugs. If you notice drafts around them, you can put insulation behind the plate to keep the cold air out.

When you winter-proof your home, the time and effort is an investment in your home. Winterizing your home will result in a warmer house even if you set your thermostat a couple of degrees cooler. You’ll also notice a difference in your energy bills during the winter months.

Painting your house can be very exciting, but it is also hard work. When you paint your house, you want to be sure that you do not have to paint again for quite some time. The best way to ensure that you will not have to do subsequent painting, except for touch-ups, is to choose the right color scheme the first time. Choosing colors that you like will also help to avoid any regrets after the painting is done.

Choosing which color to paint your living area depends on the size of the room. Typically, the smaller the room, the lighter color you will want to paint. Because darker colors make a room seem closed in, you will want to avoid darker shades.
However, it is possible to have a dark color in the living room if it is limited to one wall as an accent color. And if the living room is rather large, painting the room a dark color will not take away from the size; it may actually make it seem cozier than if the room is oversized.

The kitchen area is one of the main spaces in the house in addition to the living area. The kitchen area can be painted darker than the living area if desired. To add dimension to the kitchen, textured paint looks great and comes in many different colors and styles. Coordinate the paint colors with the flooring for a dynamic impact.

Bedroom colors should match preferences. Since nobody but your family really sees the bedrooms in the house, it’s simply a matter of choice. For babies’ rooms, neutral or gender-specific colors are recommended and for older children, choosing their own color is a way to get them involved in the process.

Painting your bathrooms can be difficult. Bathrooms are usually about atmosphere to outsiders only. However, there are some people who paint their bathrooms bold colors such as bright orange to reflect a bold personality in a way that may not be feasible in other parts of the house. Coordinate the paint with the fixtures in the bathroom, including flooring for the best results.

The final place left is to paint the hallways. The hallways should be an extension of the living room and kitchen colors, especially since they are right off the hallway. If your hallways are narrow, stick to lighter colors. The same is true if your living area and kitchen are painted dark colors. By painting your hallway a lighter color, you will accent the kitchen and living areas. If your hallway is wide, painting it a dark color will help to narrow and accent it.

Choosing the right color scheme for your house is based on preference. Smaller rooms can be made to look larger if painted with light colors and a large living space can look cozy if painted darker. Kitchens and bathrooms are great places to accent either with bold or textured paints.

Whichever colors you decide to paint your home, keep in mind that you can always change your colors later on if you decide against the ones you have chosen. It may be a lot of hard work, but it is a part of making your home just that – your home.

Selling your home can be a very exciting time. It is important, however, to make sure that your house is dressed to sell. One way of making sure that the house is presented well to prospective buyers is to paint it. Use the following tips to maximize your selling potential:

* Use neutral colors in high traffic areas. Using neutral colors helps the buyers to envision what can be done to the house. If the high traffic areas are painted a bold or dark color, it may be difficult for the buyers to see the potential.

* When you paint, be sure to sand off any bumps that may have been left behind in the prior paint jobs. Painting over blemishes will only call attention to them. Another important part of painting is to use primer if you are painting the walls a lighter color. Primer helps to cover the darker color entirely, thus giving you a blank slate to paint on.

* Use the bedrooms to showcase colors. Since the main part of the house is generally a lighter color and bedrooms are color palettes, this is a great way to emphasize bedroom sizes. If you have a large bedroom, using a darker shade can provide a cozy atmosphere. Where the bedrooms are small, use lighter colors to give the appearance of a larger room. Use curtains in a coordinating shade to set the stage.

* One of the most often overlooked aspects of a house is the exterior. Painting the exterior of the house a different shade than the neighbors will help the house to stand out. Buyers have different preferences, so keep the house within a reasonable shade, yet different from your neighbors. At best, give the exterior a good power wash so that the house appears clean from the outside.

Setting the stage is an important part of selling your house. Prospective buyers need to envision the potential that exists within the house to consider it a property they may want to buy. Painting the house is a great way to show off the best features of the house and draw more buyers in.

Curtains have many uses inside your home. They can be used for privacy, decoration or even covering up an old or ugly window. Curtains come in many different styles and fabrics, and with or without linings. Length is an important factor to keep in mind when choosing curtains as well. Curtains will have an impact on your home and it is up to you to determine what that impact is.

Coordinating curtain colors with your rooms is always a good idea because it will help the room to flow. You can also change the color of the room if you really want a drastic change, and choose a paint color to go with your new curtains.

Curtains come in different lengths and different styles. Think about the look you want to achieve with your curtains. Do you want to simply hang curtains for privacy? Then your best bet is to get thick curtains and drape them over the top of a window with a rod. Thick curtains also work hard to keep your energy costs down. By keeping out the sun in the summer, there is less need for the air conditioner to be running, therefore saving you money on electricity.

Sheer curtains are good for accenting a room and they come in many different textures and colors. Lacy curtains are great for décor and add a feminine touch to the room. Sheer curtains are also good for draping over a curtain rod and will add to the elegance of a room. For a more formal look, choose a box valance to go with your curtains.

Lastly, think about how to you want to hang the curtains. Do you want them sitting on a regular curtain rod, or do you want something bold that will stand out and hang above the window? Visit your local home goods store or home improvement store. These stores typically have a large selection of curtain rods available in many colors, sizes and styles.

Think about the desired look you are trying to achieve for your room and ask for assistance if need be. The type of curtain rod you choose will either enhance your curtain choice or it will have the opposite effect than what you wanted.

Curtains can serve many purposes in your home. They may be on display as décor, to save energy costs by keeping sunlight out or simply for privacy purposes. Curtains also come in many different styles. Choose the style you want to reflect in the room: thicker is better for privacy or for keeping sun out, while sheer or light-colored curtains are ideal for elegance or simplicity.
